As the only NGO in Malta dedicated solely to combating bullying, we cannot remain silent about the troubling bullying situation currently unfolding on Love Island Malta. This daily display of harmful behaviour on our national TV station is distressing for viewers and undoubtedly more so for the contestants directly affected. We must address this issue immediately to safeguard the mental health of those involved and to show the public how such situations should be properly managed.
Love Island Malta, a popular reality TV show, has recently come under scrutiny for the bullying behaviours exhibited by some contestants. These incidents, broadcasted daily, have sparked outrage and concern among viewers. The distress and anger felt by the audience are palpable, and we can only imagine the emotional turmoil that the contestants themselves are experiencing. Bullying in any form is unacceptable, and when it is displayed so publicly, it sends a dangerous message that such behaviour is tolerated or even normalized.
Watching bullying unfold on television can have a profound impact on viewers, particularly younger audiences who may be more impressionable. It can normalize harmful behaviours, create anxiety, and trigger past traumas for those who have experienced bullying themselves. More importantly, the mental health of the contestants involved in these altercations is at serious risk. The pressure, humiliation, and stress of being bullied in front of a national audience can lead to long-term psychological effects, including depression, anxiety, and suicide.
